In our previous article, we discussed the various properties of the NTFS and FAT32 file systems, in this article we are going to learn how to
convert from the FAT32 to NTFS without any software, formatting or data loss.
NOTE:Make sure you back up your data first before attempting
the conversion process. This method is possible on operating systems running
windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8.
FAT32 TO NTFS CONVERSION
STEPS
- Identify the letter of the drive that you wish to convert.
- Go to:
Start menu > Type ‘cmd’ (without quotes) into the search
field > Open the cmd program
- In the cmd program, type in the command ‘help convert’
(without quotes) to provide the various options related to the conversion
process from FAT to NTFS.
- In the results, use the second option which contains the
command /FS:NTFS, with the drive letter you initially identified, type in a
new command ‘Convert H/FS:NTFS’ (without quotes) where H is the letter of the
drive to be converted.
After typing in the command, press ENTER and wait for the
process to complete. Upon completion, the cmd will show a message indicating
that the conversion was successful.
NOTE: This method can not convert NTFS to FAT so in-order to
reverse the process, you will need to format the drive which will ultimately
lead to data loss. So you need to be careful before you decide to take the
conversion route.
